Do I actually need all of these certifications?
It depends on the work you intend to do. Structural and fabrication work generally calls for CWB certification, pressure work calls for ABSA authorization, and pipeline work brings CSA Z662 into the picture. What’s the difference between CWB Division 1, 2, and 3?
The Divisions describe how welding decisions are made and who owns them. Division 3: you work within pre-defined, prequalified procedures, simple, but you can’t adapt when work falls outside the limits. Division 2: you have engineering support when you need it, flexibility without full-time engineering overhead. Division 1: welding engineering is fully integrated and your team controls procedures internally. The right level depends on how predictable your work is, not on company size.
