Welder Qualifications: Pressure

How does pressure welder qualification work with Qualimet?

Pressure welder qualification covers pressure piping under CSA Z662 and pressure vessels under ABSA and TSBC, along with industrial fabrication and refrigeration systems. Qualimet qualifies pressure welders fast when an audit or inspection is closing in. That’s true whether you need one welder renewed before an expiry date or a whole crew ready before production starts. Qualifications connect to WPS alignment, inspection validation and engineering support in one chain, so the paperwork reflects what’s actually happening on the job.

What Qualimet qualifies

  • CSA Z662 pressure piping qualification.
  • ABSA and TSBC pressure vessel qualification.
  • Industrial fabrication welder qualification.
  • Refrigeration systems, including brazer performance qualification.

Qualimet qualifies your crew against whichever of these actually applies to the project.

  • 12 ABSA Certified Welding Examiners.
  • 10 fully equipped testing stations.
  • Same-day in-house results.
  • Dedicated time for practice welds before the test.

A shutdown or turnaround doesn’t wait for a welder to get qualified

Pressure qualification often gets treated as routine admin instead of the regulatory risk it actually is. A certification can look fine on paper and still not match the specific CSA Z662, ABSA or TSBC scope a project actually requires. That gap is exactly what shows up in an audit. The same pressure shows up whether a contractor PM is racing a shutdown or turnaround date, or a welding supervisor needs pass rates that hold up to scrutiny. It also shows up when an individual welder just wants a clear, predictable process. The scope-mismatch version is the one Qualimet runs into most, usually after an inspector has already flagged it, leaving a certificate on file that doesn’t actually cover the work.

What competitors miss: WPS alignment, inspection and engineering in one chain

A qualification certificate on its own doesn’t guarantee it matches your actual welding procedure. Qualimet connects welder qualification to WPS alignment, inspection validation during the work itself and engineering support, all in one chain, so the paperwork reflects what’s actually happening on the job. That depends on inspection and engineering teams working alongside the same qualification process, which is the piece a standalone testing shop doesn’t have in-house.

How a Qualimet pressure welder qualification runs

  1. Choose in-house or on-site: Qualimet tests at its own facility or brings testing to your shop or project, so your schedule stays intact.
  2. Run practice welds: Every welder on your crew gets dedicated time on practice welds before the test that counts.
  3. Test and get same-day results: Qualimet’s 12 ABSA Certified Welding Examiners issue your results from the in-house lab the same day.
  4. Track and renew: Qualimet tracks your crew’s expiry dates and manages renewals ahead of your next project start.

Qualimet’s credentials

Qualimet’s examiner authority is backed by real credentials. We’re CWB-certified and hold an ABSA Certificate of Authorization. We’re also an APEGA permit holder, with P.Eng. registrations across six jurisdictions: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and the Yukon. We run our own in-house testing lab and have operated since 1973.

What a tracked qualification chain guarantees on renewal day

Once qualification runs through the same chain as WPS alignment and inspection, a certificate actually matches the scope a project requires. A renewal gets tracked before it becomes a scramble. Qualimet’s refrigeration-systems scope, including brazer performance qualification, connects into the Light Industrial and Commercial Compliance Program for shops running compliance across more than one area. Qualimet pressure welder qualifications questions

Can welder qualification testing be finished before a shutdown or turnaround?

Yes. Qualimet schedules testing around your shutdown, turnaround or mobilization date and same-day in-house results mean certification is usually in hand before you need to prove it. Call ahead of your date so we can confirm testing capacity.

Will testing interrupt production or pull welders off the shop floor?

Not if you choose the on-site option. We bring testing to your shop or project, so welders stay on the floor between test slots. In-house testing at our own facility is also available if that fits your schedule better.

Does ABSA certification automatically match my CSA Z662 project scope?

Not automatically. Certification and project scope are two different things, and treating them as the same is a common gap that shows up in audits. Qualimet qualifies welders against the specific pressure piping, vessel or fabrication scope your project actually requires. We check that specific match before your welder sits the test.

How quickly does Qualimet issue certification, and will regulators accept it?

Our in-house lab issues same-day results for most testing, so certification is ready quickly for your project. Our examiners qualify welders directly against ABSA and TSBC requirements, so the resulting certification is built to be accepted without a back-and-forth.

What happens after a welder passes their qualification test with Qualimet?

Qualification isn’t a one-time event. We track expiry dates, manage renewals ahead of your next project start and keep documentation audit-ready. That means certification doesn’t quietly lapse or turn into a scramble when an inspector asks for proof. We flag your crew’s renewals early enough to actually act on them.

What’s the difference between an ABSA ‘B’ pressure ticket and a CWB structural ticket?

An ABSA ‘B’ Pressure ticket qualifies a welder for pressure piping and vessel work under ABSA jurisdiction, tied to CSA Z662 and related pressure codes. A CWB structural ticket qualifies a welder for structural steel work under CSA W47.1, a different code covering a different kind of failure risk. Qualimet issues both for your crew, and a welder working across pressure and structural scopes on the same site typically needs a separate ticket for each. Our Welder Qualifications: Structural page covers the CWB side in more depth.
