Welder Qualifications: Structural

Get your CWB structural welder qualification at our Edmonton testing facility

CWB structural welder qualification confirms a welder has passed CSA W47.1 and AWS testing under a CWB Authorized Testing Facility. Qualimet is that facility, testing structural welders against those standards and verifying the qualification against your actual project scope. Foremen get certified welders ready before a run starts, project managers get compliance documentation an inspector won’t reject and welders get a scheduled test with same-day results.

Welding processes Qualimet’s CWB testing covers

  • SMAW.
  • FCAW.
  • MCAW.
  • GMAW.
  • GTAW.

Book the process and position your project actually requires. Call Qualimet’s Weld Testing Centre: Toll-free 1-800-621-8979.

What to bring on Qualimet’s test day

  • Valid government-issued ID.
  • Welder’s helmet.
  • Safety glasses.
  • Welding gloves.
  • Steel-toed boots.
  • Buffing wheel (not supplied on-site).

Qualimet provides everything else at the testing station, so your only job is showing up ready.

A CWB ticket alone doesn’t confirm a welder is qualified for this specific project

Structural welder qualification often gets treated as routine admin rather than a compliance risk. Part of that is assuming a certified welder is automatically valid for any project that comes up. The same gap shows up whether a fabricator foreman needs certified welders before a run starts, or a project manager needs documentation an inspector will actually accept. It also shows up when a welder is dealing with booking friction just to get tested in the first place. The assumed-valid version is the one that shows up most, and it’s usually caught once an inspection is already underway, with a mismatch nobody checked sitting exposed on your run until then.

Qualifications verified against your project scope, not just a ticket

A CWB or AWS ticket confirms a welder passed a test. It doesn’t confirm they’re qualified for what your project specifically requires. Because Qualimet’s inspection program sits in-house alongside its testing facility, Qualimet verifies welders against your project’s actual scope during fabrication and site inspections. That’s the gap a standalone testing ticket leaves open, since it depends on running both testing and inspection under the same roof.

How a Qualimet CWB structural qualification runs

  1. Book a session: Qualimet runs CWB Structural Steel Welder Testing every second Friday at its Edmonton facility, covering SMAW, FCAW, MCAW, GMAW and GTAW. Call ahead to lock in your date.
  2. Run practice welds: You get dedicated time on practice welds before the test that counts.
  3. Test and get same-day results: Qualimet’s in-house lab delivers your result the same day, with a CWB representative reviewing it directly with you.
  4. Verify against your project: Qualimet checks the qualification against your project’s actual scope during fabrication and site inspections.

Qualimet’s credentials

Qualimet’s status as a CWB Authorized Testing Facility is backed by real credentials. We’re CWB-certified and hold an ABSA Certificate of Authorization. We’re also an APEGA permit holder, with P.Eng. registrations across six jurisdictions: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and the Yukon. We run our own in-house testing lab and have operated since 1973.

Qualifications checked against scope stop mismatches at inspection

Once a qualification is checked against your project’s actual scope, an inspection stops turning up a mismatch nobody caught earlier. A lapsed ticket gets flagged before it holds up a run. Qualimet also delivers AWS qualifications on-site at your own facility, matched to your working conditions, so your crew doesn’t lose a shift traveling to Edmonton. Qualimet structural welder qualifications questions

What welding processes can we test for at a CWB structural session?

Qualimet’s CWB Structural Steel Welder Testing sessions cover SMAW, FCAW, MCAW, GMAW and GTAW. Book the process and position your project actually requires, and we’ll schedule your test against it directly, so the ticket you walk away with matches the work you’re doing.

How often does Qualimet run CWB testing sessions?

We run sessions every second Friday at our Edmonton facility. Scheduled sessions mean you’re booking a known slot, which matters when your fabrication run or inspection date is already set. We publish the schedule up front so you can plan your crew’s testing around it.

Can AWS qualifications be done at our own facility?

Yes. We deliver AWS qualifications in-house or on-site at your facility, matched to your actual working conditions. That keeps your welders on the job on days they’d otherwise spend traveling to Edmonton. We bring the same examiners and process to your site that we run at our own facility.

What does a welder need to bring on test day?

Bring a valid government-issued ID along with your welder’s helmet, safety glasses, welding gloves and steel-toed boots. You’ll also need to bring your own buffing wheel. Qualimet doesn’t supply it
on-site, but we provide everything else at the testing station itself.

How does Qualimet verify a welder against a specific project?

Because our inspection program runs in-house alongside our testing facility, we check welders against your project’s actual scope during fabrication and site inspections. That’s what turns a general ticket into project-level proof of qualification for your job specifically.

What’s the difference between CWB and AWS welder qualification?

CWB qualification tests a welder against CSA W47.1, the Canadian standard governing structural steel fabrication and erection. AWS qualification tests against the American Welding Society’s own set of codes, which some project specs call for directly, especially on cross-border or client-specified work. Qualimet tests to both, so a welder doesn’t need two separate testing providers depending on which standard a given project names. We schedule both types of testing through the same facility and the same booking process for your crew.
